Cooking Dinner Vol. I

Cooking Diner Vol. I from William Hereford on Vimeo.

I created this with Ithai last week as a kind of experiment combining typeface typical of magazines with video which has been shot and edited to feel like a still photograph. Its a small piece of a greater spiel I've been giving to magazines over the last month or two. My hope is to develop this video to work with tablet computers so that you could "swipe" between the vignettes instead of them playing with a rigid sequence from start to end.

Tablets (and the internet really) provide the opportunity to look at moving images with the same studied intensity as a still photograph. Traditionally we are at the director's mercy regarding when a shot begins and ends- the whole experience is fleeting, which can be wonderful , but I like the idea of creating a moving image which runs on a loop or is shot over a long period of time so the media can be consumed and studied in ways a traditional film cannot.

  1. That is beautiful. Straight forward and clean. I must say, a rather dramatic song choice, yet with the cooking, it comes across as soothing and the whole thing breathes with anticipation. It is exciting to see the recipe through to the end.

  2. Yea I've gotten mixed reviews on the song choice- my favorite being that "it doesn't have mass appeal." I love the song so I'm super biased...

  3. Love this William. Made me actually want to cook vs. making reservations.

Beyond the visuals, I love that you can hear the crackle of the record.

    Thanks for sharing.

Keep them coming! Can't wait to work with you and your team again. Ronna

  4. Really nice. Is this using the pancake lens?

  5. Agreed – beautiful! I just posted about this, comparing it to a recent digital kitchen project by Intel — and arguing that this sort of tactile, hands-on, approach to cooking should be used, instead of the antiseptic way we often are presented with food.

  7. Loved it - the music was great and the colour simply beautiful. For a moment I felt so transported and relaxed.

I loved the four 'frames' at the very end and your choice of angles - only a couple of times did I feel the font infringed on the image somewhat but for the most part I found this a very intriguing yet effective way to express a recipe..looking forward to vol. II.

  8. Wow, I'm truly impressed. Lots of passion and emotion. That's what cooking ist about, at the end of the day. And I think you're also on interesting track with your thoughts on tablet computers and moving images. All in all really inspiring stuff. Thanks and lots of respect from Cologne, Germany.

And, by the way, great Soundtrack chosen!

  11. It is beautiful. I think though that to work in practice users would need a way to flick in and out of the video, to learn technique and enjoy the experience, as well as static text, in a flow so that you could read the recipe from start to finish in one go. Perhaps taking advantage of up-down as well as right-left flicking?

  12. Great idea. Suggest some of the potential for combination media as well as one of the difficulties. I find it interesting that it is almost impossible to concentrate on the text as your eye is constantly drawn to the moving visual, even when they are out of focus. Nice work!

  13. I really love this too, and I think the music is perfect. I think it has mass enough appeal, in that everyone can enjoy some classic French music while cooking a delicious dish.

Everything about this is perfect, and I would REALLY love to see more!
